What is an EICR Electrician?

An EICR electrician is essentially any electrician as all hold the qualifications to perform EICRs. However you might hear the term EICR specialist or EICR electrician when said electrician specifically specialises in EICRs. What’s involved during an EICR?

An EICR has one main purpose. To locate and identify the severity of any electrical faults detected in a property. An EICR typically takes a few hours to complete - longer if it’s a large commercial property. The EICR grades faults found using a code system. These include:

• C1: Danger is present, immediate repair work required. 
• C2: Potentially dangerous. Repair work required soon. 
• C3: Improvement recommended. To ensure the system remains compliant, repair work is strongly recommended especially in commercial settings. 
• FI: Further investigation. This code is used for issues that require further investigation to determine the faults severity. 
  
  Any required repair work will need to be completed within 28 days following the inspection date.

How often is an EICR required?

An EICR is required every:

• Ten years in residential homes. 
• Five years in rented homes. Or at tenancy changes. 
• Five years for standard commercial settings like offices and shops, unless advised otherwise. 
• Three years for higher risk settings like farms, hotels, factories. 
• Year in hospitals, petrol stations and other similar high risk settings.

What happens if my EICR expires?

If you know your EICR is expired or expires soon, you should contact your local EICR electrician as soon as possible. They’ll get you booked in promptly and provide you with a renewed EICR assuming no faults are found. If you decide to not renew your EICR your home or business could be at risk.

As an employer, it’s your responsibility to ensure your employees are working in a safe and functional environment. If an incident involving the electrics occurs, and someone is hurt, without a valid EICR you have nothing protecting you from being held accountable. A valid EICR is proof you’ve done everything possible as an employer to keep your employees safe.

As a homeowner, you may also run into trouble if your EICR is invalid. If in the unfortunate event an electrical fire occurs, any home or contents insurance may become voided if in the insurance conditions a valid EICR is required.
