Most of the time you should be able to install battery storage alongside your existing solar panels. The best outcome is usually decided around the installation of your solar panels.
If you're someone who had solar panels installed a while ago, it may not be the most practical solution to change the inverter - therefore on occasions like this we would suggest installing an independent AC-coupled battery by connecting this directly to the home's consumer unit or fuseboard. Alternatively, you can integrate the battery into the solar panels by swapping out the current inverter. This would be replaced with what we call a ‘hybrid inverter’ - the sole purpose of this is to simultaneously control both the solar panels and the battery. This is the more intricate option of the two but the benefits are greater, it’s the better option in the long run and more efficient than an independent AC- coupled battery.
